Giant FISHTAIL palms. (Caryota gigas.)

The largest of the numerous types of Caryota "fishtail" palms is this C. gigas. This is on the smaller size- with more water and fertilizer they become enormous.

Love their big sprawling shape!

You really need to see one in person Kate. I once saw a photo of one here in the bay area growing next to a home that looked like mine..same size. That palm given much better care than the zoo specimen had fronds that arched OVER that house. Fronds as long as the house is. Totally out of scale and why I loved it-ha.

Caryota gigas really needs a lot of room. They become monstrous trees! It look good a the zoo.

The lighting that day in January was so low even in the early afternoon. It was hard to get a good photo of anything.
I wish the zoo would go all in on the tropicals..the climate is super mild all year. Rare to be hot also in summer.

It would be nice to see more tropicals.

They unlike the SD Zoo,have no horticulturist on staff. Its groundskeepers and one local nursery owner who I think is donating those tropicals that you see. I did talk to him once and he said that between nobody who really knows plants and the need to cut water use...this zoo is slowly adding exotic plants. I only saw a few new plants since i was last there about four or five years ago. But the older ones have really grown give them that.

Honestly, palm fronds THAT size I would love to see…arching artistically over the house - beautiful I would say!

Those who lavish those palms Kate can get humongous frond growths. Almost unbelievable.

Here’s a pic of the giant Caryota at the San Diego Zoo. Unfortunately, it was cut down when they redid this area.

Those were looking primo. Most people just don't water them or feed them enough.

Very true.

I noticed some of your pics have just disappeared. This pic of the Caryota isn’t visible, anymore. I noticed some of my pics have disappeared, also. I’m not sure why.

Same for everybody's older photos. Older than a week or so.
They might have run out of room to host 5mb and its for lower mb? Pure guess.

Whatever I posted from Feb1st to 21st is a broken link. Older and newer photos are still there.
