My small 4 ft Kohala longan tree has flower spikes emerging (with new leaves) for the first time. I only purchased it last summer. It’s been loving all the hot weather here in San Diego, CA. I hope to get some fruit this year. Photo taken February 26, 2022.

Klahanie,
It’s similar to lychee. I think it’s sweeter. I can eat 5 lbs a day when it’s in season. Lol!

Seaburngirl,
Longan is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. There’s many large, old trees here in San Diego. It’s a very ornamental tree like lychee.

Klanhanie,
Lychee and longan are summer fruit. These trees want dry and cooler weather to set the flowers. They technically don’t need chilling hours, as they’re tropical trees, but like some cooler weather when dormant.

Lychee trees become massive trees in time. The largest ones I’ve ever seen where growing in Hilo, HI. One year I was visiting family and friends in May and the massive trees in Hilo were loaded with fruit. They’re very ornamental.

You need a cherry picker or a very big ladder. Lol
The buds are just starting to flower. Hopefully, it’ll set some fruit! It’s an air-layered tree which I’m not sure long it’s been growing roots. If I get ten fruits I’d be happy. :))
