It’s name comes from the fuzzy tometum on the crownshaft.

I wonder if Jim Dent has tried that in the bay area? Other then him and Darold Petty,not many longtime palm growers in the bay area post. Of course Darold in SF has zero chance of growing this because of the lack of warmth in SF. But mid to south bay has a shot.

Probably in the south bay would be bet for it to grow.

At Darold Petty’s house it would die within months. I’ve known Darold Petty for years, since the mid-80’s. I’ve been to his house many times. I gave him my large Howea when I moved from Fremont in 1998.

I almost made the trip to his house a few years ago. I was going to buy a Satakentia palm,but changed my mind eventually.
Really nobody in the central east bay who I know or even heard of has a true palm garden going and has going what is usually seen in socal. P. reclinata should be tried here. I've seen a couple of Bizmarckia's ( mine killed by gophers) that are trunking- impressive for sure. Its a good time to try, 32 years since a hard freeze and counting.

I had a Satakentia palm in the SF Bay Area it actually died when I moved to San Diego.

Yes, exactly 32 years this week since the big, horrible 1990 freeze! I remember my garden was decimated!

It’ll be 16 years in January since the horrible, big cold wave-freeze in southern California. It never got to freezing here, but the outer cities and canyons were below freezing and around Los Angeles and Orange Counties. It was the coldest weather to hit the San Diego Area in 60 years and the coldest weather to hit the deserts in 75 years.

2007 was the last time we dipped to 30f. Socal got a more direct hit that year. January Andy is looking to be a rainy month and that should hold off the frost season until next December the way things are these days. 2023 will involve much pruning and some large clumps of Aloes to be thinned.

Even though it’s been dry and in the 70’s the last 3 days, and is forested to be between 79 and 83 degrees on Christmas day big rains are forecasted Wednesday - Saturday.

I’ve been pruning, also, I just took out a big Thunbergia ‘Blushing Susan’ on the side of the house. It pops up everywhere.

I want to plant it like this again with Pachystachys lutea
