Lychee chinensis ‘Sweetheart’

Lychee chinensis ‘Sweetheart’ (Lychee chinensis ‘Sweetheart’)

My litchi is full of small fruit all over the 5 ft tall tree. It’s very surprising it produced so many small fruit in this unusually cool weather here in San Diego. Hopefully, it won’t drop the little fruit. Photo taken May 4, 2023.

Will keep everything crossed for you. The weather has been very unusual everywhere this past few months.

Kate,

Thanks 🙏! Yes, very unusual weather here. It feels like winter. Highs only 64 to 70 degrees (that’s our normal January temps) for here in San Diego.

Klahanie,

Thank you 🙏! There’s a lot of fruit on this little tree. I hope it doesn’t abort the fruit! It needs water virtually every day. If Lychee trees don’t get enough water during flowering they will drop all their fruit.

Lychee trees can be very temperamental. Where they are grown commercially it’s a very high-maintenance tree.

The trees are very hardy. They do need some hours of chilling, not many, though.
