Hyophorbe lagenicaulis - Bottle Palm

Hyophorbe lagenicaulis - Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis - Bottle Palm)

It’s really sad to see these old bottle palms look so drought-striken! 😞. The ground is like concrete! There used to be so many lush species of palms in this area, when it was watered and fertilized. Now, only the most drought tolerant palms survive. Photo taken November 30, 2024.

They definitely look like they're struggling.

Yes, the soil is literally like concrete and we haven’t had any rain this season.

This area in front of this big industrial building used to have royal palms, Kentia palms, Licuala spinosa, Caryota mitis (Fishtail palm). One of the bottle palms died about 10 years ago. Now, only Dypsis decari (Triangle palm); Sabal species and Wodyetia (Foxtail palm) along with Mexican fan palms grow there.

I still have a pair in a 10 or 15 gallon pot that I grew from seed. They are starting to look like something. I doubt I will ever plant them out. But, never say never I guess.

Wow! That’s impressive! I really don’t think this tree will ever grow outside in the SF Bay Area. It really doesn’t like even frost-free chilly weather.

Andy, this might be the first winter that we never had a single low temperature in the 30's. That's wild for the eastbay. At least so far so good. Long range is for lows only in the 40's.

I did see lows in the 30’s there earlier this week. My friends were telling about frost everywhere on New Year’s Eve morning. But, I’ve noticed overall it’s been mild and relatively warm during the daytime there.

We haven’t had a low below 47 degrees here, so far. Yesterday it was 80 degrees here and 70 degrees in downtown SD.

We’re getting very concerned about rain, so far only .14 of an inch of rain here. It’s so extremely dry. I’m watering almost every day. Ugh! Water rates went up another 8 percent on the first.

Weather channel does say 39f. Up here we are 100-120% of rain. Its been weeks since i touched the hose. Even then it was for the potted plants. Everything seems a bit different. Aloes have budded stems, and the usual winter look is not there with many plants. Supposed to be sunny and 65f all next week. The oldest Mango looks fine and like a tree now.
I should post some pics. Haven't done that on any site for months.

It’s definitely been a very mild winter so far. Hopefully, it’ll stay like this through February.
