down our 'Madeira' steps

view down our long and narrow terraced garden - the Madeira steps so called because of the thousands of steps like these all over the island which are beautiful but have a sad history: slaves were used in back-braking labour to make the steep terrain accessible. The time and effort these steps took only give the slightest hint of what they went through.
