Ivory orchid

Ivory orchid

No, I haven't gone and purchased one of these yet... they were for sale at work, and so lovely that I just had to photograph them.

I guarantee that when you do...you will be hooked...orchids are very seductive...they take their own sweet time to put up a flower stem and the flowers stay and stay... I have three different ones now...all resting at the moment but after having them in the shade porch all summer I expect some blossom this fall.

Lori, are they hard to care for? Do they take special care? I ask because I have over 80 houseplants-99% of which mostly take care of themselves.

Others may disagree...but I've found that once you get to know what type of orchid you have (there are legions: it's one of the largest plant families) their care is quite defined and simple. as a for instance...there are orchids from the hot steamy jungles...there are orchids from high altitudes...there are orchids in the temperate zone..(paphiopedillums~ lady's slipper) I don't know for absolute sure..but I don't think that there is a continent on earth that doesn't have some type of orchid..except perhaps Antarctica. They range from very tiny terrestrial plants to huge epiphytes that grow in the jungle canopy....the easiest to find and the most reasonable to buy are the moth orchids (phalaenopsis) or cymbidium or oncidiums...I'd suggest starting with a phalaenopsis. they grow in a bark mixture...will be happy in our relatively dry homes, like cool night temps (this is a blossom trigger) and once you find the right window in your house they will be happy as a clam...as long as you water them!
