thinking of making this a japanese themed area , I have a quince and maple to plant here, only thing is its quite dry and in full sun all day

This looks fantastic ! It certainly does have a oriental feel about it, I think they would look great here. Jap. maples and quince don't like to have 'wet feet', so they should do fine here.
