It can only have been a youngster. Amazingly sat there while I fetched my camera, but wouldn't let me get closer.Yesterday 28 Sept.

One regularly visits us to pick off collared doves.

I'm on the edge of open country (moorland), Arlene, but also on the edge of the Manchester conurbation, a pretty special spot.
There are kestrels around on the moors, maybe I've seen a sparrowhawk before and thought it wasa kestrel. I wish it would see off a few of the magpies!

Sounds nice-we live on the edge of a wood but within 10 mins walk of the beach and it's the rooks that drive me to distraction! they sit in the trees and when I put food out its just a sea of black! Can i borrow your sparrowhawk please?
I have had abaout 14 collared doves at one time on and around the bird table but I don't mind those so much.We get through bird seed at a rapid rate of knots though!

I've got lots of rooks too, and like yours they take anything put out for other birds. How lovely to be 10 mins from the sea.

We've got wood pigeons, they eat everything and always squabble over who is allowed on the bird table. They see off other birds and their toilet habits are not nice to say the least. They're quite handsome though. I've just noticed the word squabble, isn't a baby pigeon called a squab? perhaps there's a connection. I've seen what I think is a buzzard when walking the dogs, but it's always gone by the time I've got my camera ready for action:-(
