The arundo donax I had given in autumn and nursed it in a pot until spring. Looks OK now so I'm risking it cut back and lots of straw and hessian this year. Watch this space.

We all have plants which - fingers crossed - will survive the winter.
I'll be interested to see your techniques of wrapping up for the cold weather, with straw, etc. Thanks.

There was one of the repeats of Gardeners' World on UKTV Gardens last Monday and someone (Gay Search or someone) showed my technique which I think is standard.

Build a tripod out of 4 or 5 foot canes and string. Pack it loosely with straw or even hay (straw is better) tie hessian or fleece round the outside completely covering it. I know that everyone on here will know but I'll stress, unless there is lots of room in there do not use bubble wrap. The air should get in. That's just in case anyone has forgotten.
