What a great flower

The picture is somewhat deceiving. This is a closeup view and the flower is only an inch and a half long. It's striking if you have a bush full of them but when it grew back from a short freeze this past year it became very sparse and rangey. Only one bush out of 4 grew back. I am hoping to cut it back to encourage a bushier look and try to protect it until it matures. They are quite pretty when full and covered with these puffs of red.

I have just Googled and if any one is interested it is a Calliandra Californica member of the Lugume and Mimosa family.
Stunning colour and so delicate

Great looking close-up Skippy, I can tell it is in the mimosa family, we have alot of the Albizia julibrissin Durazz, (mimosa trees), growing here in North Carolina, and the blooms are very similar.

Yes, it is related to the mimosa as well as mesquite.
