hi Gillb' glad to help,
first decide what kind of stadard you want to grow,
full-half or weeping, i recomend you start with the half standard,
Then choose the right culivar for the purpose, as some are easier than others,
try one of these,,,, Barbara-Royal velvet- Celia smedly-Lys unique- or Snowcap, to name just a few, in fact you can try with almost any variety as long as you choose a good vigorous grower, a half standard can be achieved in one season from an early spring struck cutting,
try to find a suitable cutting with leaves in whorls of three as these make the best standard. but it is not essentsial,
once your cutting is rooted pot on into a 3"pot , and as soon as the roots reach the side of the pot move it into a 5"one, dont allow the growing tip to become damaged, as the stem increases in length remove all but the top three or four side shoots, but retain the leaves along the main stem at each leaf joint,
once u have achieved the desired height the growing point can be removed,
from then on treat the head of your plant as a bush, pinching out at regular intervals until a full head is formed. Hope this helps and good luck. ps, this is my method of doing things, not nessisarally the textbook way,
