Gardengem,

Which species of Heliconia is this? What is the color of the flower bracts?

This is a very nice specimen with no torn leaves. That's pretty unusual. My Heliconia species always have leaves that are torn even in protected spots.

Hi Delonix, I just got this plant a few weeks ago, along with the taller one. It has only been in the ground about two weeks and was in a pot before. It was grown from a cutting from someone I know. So I have not seen it flower yet. They described it as "heliconia yellow" It will get about 4 ft tall, and will have a yellowy orange bract similar to a bird of paradise plant.

Some of the leaves had died off since I planted it, but I cut the dead ones off before snapping a photo of it. :)

Thanks for the information! I'm sure it will do very well for you.

I received all my species of Heliconia from cuttings from friends...it the easiest way to know what variety you have. Seed grown plants are variable.

Marguerite,

That's actually what I meant. They are commonly grown from rhizomes and commonly sold that way.

It is probably H. angusta, however, there are so many species and varieties of Heliconia grown in the United States...where they are grown that is. LOL.

I have H. angusta var 'Yellow Christmas' and var 'Red Christmas'.

I'm not sure exactly how it was propagated as I got it this size, I guess it makes more sense that it would be by root/rhizome for these.

I have pictures of the blooms of this one and the rostrata plants that they came from, but I don't want to put up someone else's pictures without asking them first. I'm not sure how long it will take before mine flower, but I'm looking forward to seeing them too. :)
