Commonly known as the shuttlecock or ostrich fern, this can reach five feet in height and needs moist shade. Creeping stolons are produced, close to the soil surface, which will eventaully form another crown so that a colony may be built up over several years

Hi Andrew, i just bought one of these, it is a tiny little plug, that i am currently growing on in the greenhouse. mine is M. struth 'The King' i have plans to plant it in my woodland area. I know that it needs damp acid soil, and can tolerate some sun, Just wondered if you have any other tips that might help me be sucessful with it, i have never grown ferns before now. Is it fast growing? Thug ability? lol How hardy etc. any advice you can offer would be much appreciated. thanks Angie.

This one is pretty tough but it will get large in time - five feet tall and three feet across. You don't want anything precious too close to it as the fronds collapse in autumn and smother anything within range
