Solid Pink Anthurium

My experience with Anthurium is that they can bloom quite profusely in Fall and Winter only in semi-shad to shady condition here though. Do you grow your Anthuriums in full sun or semi-shade to shady conditions?

I read in one of your postings you sometimes get freezes. If you have a freeze the plants will have to be protected or they'll be history.

Hi Delonix, this is the first try for Anthuriums for me. I have them planted in partial shade along with some other sub-tropical/tropical plants. We get slight freezes one or two days a year. So I'll have to remember to cover this bed up.

When I moved in, they had planted lots of crotons and impatiens which both died off and came back after a freeze last year. I didn't do much with protecting the plants as I didn't like some of the plants that were here. I'm just getting around to replacing some of the beds and have been trying to get ideas of what to plant by visiting the public gardens around here.

You guys seem to have a similar climate there as many of the same types of plants seem to grow there. I have been through San Diego once, and it was hotter and also a much drier climate than FL.

It sounds like you have a really nice garden for your Anthuriums and other tropical plants. It seems that's all you need to do is cover them to protect these plants if you get a slight freeze.

San Diego climate is definitely drier than Florida's climate...where I live we don't get freezing temperatures luckily, however, some of the inland-valleys and canyon areas can get down to freezing occasionally. We have a lot of micro-climates in San Diego. I'm located on a south-facing mesa about 460 feet high which insures perfect cold-air drainage. In January of 2007, we had the coldest weather in San Diego recorded in 60 years. My coldest temperature reading was one morning at 35 degrees F. and 2 other mornings at 39 degrees F. which was very unusual.

I haven't tried to grow these outside. Mine are house plants and they do well inside. Nice soft color on this one.

Where do yo live in California? If, you live in Southern Cal.
Anthuriums can grow under trees or in a covered patios out of
full sun or in morning sun for some species.

We live in Gilroy, CA it's about an hr and a 1/2 from SF and about 30 min from the coast. Summer temps average about 95-100's and low winter temps about 28-30 degrees. I'll have to try one outside and see how it does.

I planted the Anthuriums close to the house and in the same bed. So hopefully they will be easy to cover and protect if we get a freeze this year. This is my first time growing them at all. They seem to be happy in partial shade.
