Guess that saves me from having to cover the trunk with leaves and plastic this year, also means that next year I won't have a 6 ft tall banana leafing out in my yard in late May too, darn it !

I've got my fingers crossed GT,everything's really grown up in front of it, and it's now in full shade in very poor dirt. Might need to cross my toes as well...lol

For its size, I'm surprized it hasn't sprouted new shoots already. You shoudl get a newby, even if its in the same spot. My fingers are crossed too! :-)

Wow! I've never seen the bloom on a banana tree. Fascinating...did you have a warm spell that confused it?

No, I rapped the heart of the stalk up last winter so it wouldn't die back to the ground. Banana trees have to be about 18 months old to bloom. I was hoping that it wouldn't bloom this year, being it didn't send up a pup for me to overwinter this year. It was just too dry here this year, one of the worst droughts in our history. But we received quite a bit of rain in late September, so the hard-headed thing decided it just had to bloom, now it is going to die.

Maybe two or three new little ones as a gift from one big one!
