How on earth do they support that body size on a twig of a leg.

Thanks for reminding me Catfinch ! It's sad I don't take the time to do it more often...I'm definitely going to change that bad habit. I'd forgotten how much fun it was. The fish were biting as soon as my bobber hit the water !
Ams I was wondering the same thing myself. Then he goes and lifts one of them, and starts resting on one leg.... the big show off..lol.

Have you seen the size of those feet ? Most birds tuck them up but the poor heron has to trail them behind - so able to spread weight on these huge plates of meat.( feet )

No Bonkers, I'd never noticed before, this is the closest I had ever been to one that was in a tree. I'm used to seeing them wading through the shallow part of the lake. I wonder, are they related to the flamingo ? I will have to do some research on this.

Do you mean are they pink and eat shrimps ? Well guess not ( he he you ll get no sense from me ) think herons related to egrets.

You are crazy Bonkers ...lol . I'd like to have a plate full of shrimps, now that you've mentioned it. I can tell it's late and my dinner has worn off ! Back to the subject (if I can think now, over my growling stomach), I have seen the lovely white egrets out on the lake too, I 've always considered the egrets and herons as one and the same. Shows you what little I know....lol. Now I can gladly say I know they are not. (Doesn't mean I'm going to remember it by morning though, so don't quiz me, okay ?)

Always was amazed when they lift off into the air...it's like watching a Hercules transport take off...lumber lumber lumber Whoooosh! and they look like an elogated S in flight with their long neck tucked up!
they used to frequent the spot where my dad liked to place his minnow trap! Oh...and imagine sleeping while standing on one leg? lol....!

Oooooh......, bet Dad wasn't too happy about that ! Lori, I wake up stiff and sore for about half an hour every morning, and I sleep on a pillow top mattress, can't even begin to wrap my head around the thought of what I'd feel like after sleeping standing up on one leg....LOL.
