Look what landed on my bird table today!

Look what landed on my bird table today!

This beautiful Sparrowhawk. Had to take the picture through the window, if I had gone out into porch he would have flown away. So it is a little hazy....must clean the windows!

Looks a clear picture to me.
Well-photographed.
Sparrowhawks are getting bolder and there are lots more reports of them in urban gardens. Seems they seek out Collared Doves for an easy meal !

We do not have this Hawk here that I know of...We do have very pretty Red Tail Hawks that hover over the bluff through the winter and hunt little mousies though...

Thank you everyone!

TT...he turned up again the following day. I wondered if he is a young one as he comes in to land, rather than swooping onto the birds.

BB....Well, I looked it up on RSPB site because I thought they were smaller than this. They don't give a size but pictures and descriptions fit! So I agree, they seem to be getting bigger!

Do you have a lot of Collared Doves in your area?

30 Oct, 2008

Well TT...it's funny you should ask. I did have a pair in the summer, who brought their young along to feed. Then I was back to the 2. When most of my birds 'disappeared' the doves were still about. But, thinking about it I have not seen them these last few days, but the time I leave for work and return from work means I don't see many feeding. Only see empty feeders and tables! So this weekend I will be able to see...or not..:(

How exciting getting this one in your garden. Everything is here as a food source for something else.

PP ~ please report back here on the Collared Doves. Thanks.

It's a good thing the Collared Doves seem to breed quite successfully, because they seem to be sitting ducks when Sparrowhawks are looking for lunch. :o(

Marge ~
That chocolate cake I ate today was definitely a good food source for me.:o)

Collared Dove report....I only ever see 1 now, and for some strange reason only in the morning. Never returns in the day to 'top up'.

We have one called Freda as she survived a sparrowhawk attack - shes instantly recognisable as she has loose wing feathers. We often think somethings happened to her as she disappears for days on end - only to re -appear .Sure they ll be back , unless of course your sparrowhawk a regular visitor.

BB...there's hope of seeing them again then. I have not seen the Sparrowhawk since the day I posted this pic.

TT...the chocolate ice cream I had after my tea was my good food source today! :)

Good picture! One of these landed on our side fence recently but it was all too brief a moment. There was no way I could think of getting the camera, I didn't dare move a muscle, as it was quite close to the kitchen window, and it was watching me like a, well like a, um...

er......would that be hawk, weeding? LOL. yes they are very sharp eyed, I only got it because my camera was already out and within reach and I was in my kitchen which has a porch over it, so there were 2 lots of glass between it and me!
