The begonias won't be troubled by the frost - the corms weren't frozen. Last year I didn't manage to lift all the begonias that I has in the ground. This year they came into flower at the end of July - later than those I had cosseted, but very healthy. However, if the winter is severe it wouldn't be sensible to leave them in the open ground.

The Theory is that the stems and leaves feed the tuber as they go down, so it's ideal to let them go down themselves slowly without going slimy - rotten. But i know that some growers leave them in the ground until the 1st frost to speed them up at going down, but then bring them straight in. As with most things, everyone does things a little differently.
