DO NOT LOOK IF YOU CHILL EASILY

DO NOT LOOK IF YOU CHILL EASILY

I though a little concrete post of temperature evidence on a Fahrenheit and Celcius thermometer. Celcius on the right. Fear not!

Doing great though the door has frozen shut a few times.....lol. I have a lot more humidity in here than the outdoors....lol. All warm and cozy, thanks Arlene. :-)

OMG I make that minus 35 is that right ?

22 Nov, 2008

First cold snap. Its not so clear, I think -29 C though -35-40 is common enough on a cold snap. Probably occured later that night while I wasn't looking. The ears fill like their plugged because sound isn't even the same at this temp. :-)

Whats a few minus degrees at that temp ? We re - 8 here and thats low for us are log cabins really that well insulated from such temps ? Cant such low temps be dangerous ?

23 Nov, 2008

Yep! That's cold....I truly don't envy you....but I'm glad you are there to tell us all about it...

Just have this image of Grizzly bears hammering on your log cabin door demanding to get close to that fire ! Followed by Polar bears , wolves ....
scary.

Lol, a few degree doesn't matter between -20 to -40. Then its just very very cold! lol. My cabin does as well as any insulated and drywalled home I've ever been in, though I've been in some pooorly built cabin that didn't feel so great. Bears don't do this weather they're sleeping. I get my sunny cabin to myself. :-)

Rather you than me GT. That's cold!!!! Frostbite weather for sure. Watch out for the white patches. I imagine with all your indoor plants you must have a fair bit of humidity in your home. No wonder the door froze. How about your windows? Do they get ice build up on the inside?

23 Nov, 2008

The windows are having some moisture issues this year. Natural wood framing around the downstairs windows need a bleaching to avoid mildews. I've a new door, but the seal over the threshold is icing up. I'll have to get something to lay across the base for more transition. I only see Ice in prolonged -40 periods, and we haven't seen that yet. More a January thing. I don't notice then cause the sun is back and spring is showing in the house! :-)

We were having iced windows on our single glazed, aluminum framed patio door down here last winter. Murray replaced the doors with new triple glazed vinyl framed french doors over the summer. The difference is noticable already.

cant even imagine minus 30C

27 Nov, 2008

it was positive 30ÂșC today.... lol we are on opposite spots GT

27 Nov, 2008

lol...definately different...:-)

Wow! This is why I won't live in Alaska any time soon! Do you ever get used to it being that cold for so long?

28 Nov, 2008

I actually don't really notice anymore unless its below -40. So I think you can get used to it. Luckily we have huge temp shifts, can go from -50 up to 15 overnight.

brrr.... brings back memories... minus 40 C. and 40 Below Fahrenheit ...the nexus of the temp scales. Have you experienced an ice fog yet? The effect of that is just amazing!....seems like tiny-tiny ice crystals suspended in the air before your eyes... car lights are magical...and the rising sun is a religious experience! You MUST wear a scarf to cover your face, and as is done in Siberia...if some one walks up to you on the street and says: "Watch your nose!"...they are literally telling you that your nose is turning white...and you have to warm it up immediately! The after effects of frost bite is very painful and can be disfiguring. The temp swings I remember best were always on the sinking side.... 10-15 degrees C...falling to minus ten in minutes!! Used to say...If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes!
