Our lower garden has a more woodland theme.

Occasionally we lose the ones we cosset and also the ones we abuse - there's no rhyme or reason. Mostly, the problem we have is die back of a branch or two on a few of the acers. We grow them in dense shade and in full sun. We do have a neutral/acid soil, though.
