Amaryllis " Cinderella "

My Amaryllis is coming along nicely. A second bud came out a few days ago.

Be careful of those buds Mike. That cardinal is eyeing them greedily. LOL

I've had the Cardinal for years Terratoonie. It's a decanter for James Beam Bourbon Whisky found at a flea market. It's about 12 inches high and if you look closely the white line going across the breast is where the head twists off so you can pour out the liquid.

That's funny about the cardinal, Mikec. Amaryllis is something I'd like to try but am scared to - it looks difficult but maybe it isn't...

Hi Raquel, Amaryllis isn't difficult at all. You can keep the same bulb going for years. When you buy them thy usually come in a box with a pot and a bag of soil. The instructions that come on the box are usually easy to follow. The most important thing to do is after it is through flowering, you'll want to cut off the flowering stem at the base but leave the leaves and then start fertilizing it once a month until the end of the summer. In your case you could leave it on your patio and let it get some sun. The fertilizing is the most important. At the end of the summer you would cut off the leaves and store it away somewhere and let it completely dry out. Around Thanksgiving you would then bring it back out and start watering it regularly and it would go through a growing and blooming cycle again.

Love the Jim Beam decanter! Very cool! They sell kits...potting media, bulb and pot...very reasonably. Such beautiful blossoms with little or no work attached to them!
