Those trees Youngdaisydee are just the trunks of old gum trees that were actually severely trimmed when this house was moved out here around 20 years age - the the trunks were all that was left of what would have been beautiful gum trees. They do add character to the courtyard though and look spectacular when the lights are on at night.

Geckos are a constant mess-maker around here too but I've started spraying the outside walls with eucalyptus oil and it does seem to keep their numbers down - doesn't get rid of all but there seems to be fewer. Our canetoads are usually sprayed with dettol and then my husband uses the cricket bat to hit them for a six into the bush - that sounds horrible doesn't it but they are disgusting creatures as you know. No we don't have pets - we did have a red cattle dog for over 13 years but she died of old age - she has been hard to replace.

It sounds horrible...but funny, sorry! It reminds of my dad and the Gecko battles in Hawaii. He used to spray them with a special pesticide and nozzle killing the poor things in his house. I know it sounds horrible! I would never have to the heart to kill one. Here in San Diego I just capture all the critters and take them back outside - well away from the house.

Hi Marguerite and Delonix. I think people have been searching for years for a solution to the gecko problem and haven't come up with one yet. We just have to live with their mess and appreciate the job they do I guess! I am very tired of cleaning up their mess though! Yes Marguerite I think Ruby was such a great dog that we were lucky to have had her in our lives - those red heelers make fantastic pets!

Well thanks Homebird - there are days when I do agree with you. Right now, in the winter, it is a paradise. Summer is another story - and you might hear me saying things that are not so nice!

Thanks, it looks a little different now Liverbirdlain - there's lots of potted colour out in the courtyard right now. This photo was taken back at the end of summer when it's far too hot for potted plants - but from mid-autumn to early summer I've got lots of annuals and perennials in pots to add much needed colour.

It looks very secluded and peaceful in your courtyard i like to create secluded corners if i can ,mine is too small but ive managed to use clematis to get that feel over an arch thats over a bench.

I am lucky that I have this large space and you're right - it does feel secluded - there's a large garden bed on the right hand side (out of view) that is planted with very tall shrubs and then there is the pond area with the lattice all around it. It sounds like you've created a little quiet secluded space as well. Even if it is small space, it's that lovely quiet feeling you get when you spend time there that's important.
