House Gecko

House Gecko

This fellow is not so much a garden visitor but a permanent resident of our houses - hence the name. They breed prolifically and are found in most houses in northern Australia. They make a chirping sound while they are rushing around our walls and ceilings catching small insects at night (they are mostly nocturnal). They can lose their tails when alarmed and I have actually seen one that had 3 stumpy tails grow back.

I don't fancy the idea of a three-tailed one - too much of a good thing.

Yes Marguerite I forgot to mention that they leave a big mess everywhere. Most of ours are out on the verandah, just like yours, and there's always a frantic clean-up whenever we have visitors. I think the fact that they have no eyelids makes them look like a weird alien.

Wagger when we first spotted the three-stumpy-tailed gecko we thought we were seeing things!
