The most depressing time of the year is when my elephant ears die back until spring - though in San Diego, we do experience frost, some of our EE's live through it, but do get shocked.
Since they have become my favorite plant, I built a greenhouse in the yard 10' x 10' - which allows me to grow from seed and the baby off-shoots.
I will add a few more pics of my yard.

Are you in a canyon area? Most areas of San Diego don't get frost except for some inland valleys and canyons.

Yes, we live in PQ (outside of Poway) and live in a canyon that brings a brisk freeze.
