Thank you Gilli, Irish and Linda.
We have had a week of above 40 degrees C (today 42 and tomorrow another 41 with a cool change to 25C (so we are told). The plants that have survived look pretty beaten up - photo to follow. The ferns look as if they v'e been cooked and the proteas might survive.

How do you survive in those sort of temperatures. I think that I would be very wilted.

25C to day (Sunday). Yes the weather was extreme. In Port Augusta it was 48C. We had a minor bush fire but in Victoria there are really bad ones - 25 dead and huge property losses. The global warming merchants will have a field day!!

Are you keeping safe from the fires, I saw on the news today the devastation that the fires have caused. I really feel for the people who have lost their homes and have nothing left. It must be awful for them.

We're fine for now. Those fires in Vic. and NSW are shocking, terrible etc. What else can one say.
We sometimes worry because our grounds extend to those trees in the distance (100M in front) and if a fire took hold in the conservation park beyond then we may be in trouble. But the saving grace is that those trees are to are to the NE and the winds that cause real problems are the hot northerlies.

Glad you're alright. I wonder what causes the fires to start.

What causes these fires?
Natural causes - mainly lightening
Pieces of glass focusing the sun's rays
People - criminals
- driving petrol powered cars in tall grass. The catalytic converters run almost red hot.
Cigarettes thrown from cars
Workmen welding stuff in the field and angle grinders.
Mal functioning power transformers ( Bush fire in Port Lincoln this year)
Sadly - burning rabbits running through the grass can spread the fire
Pelicans cause fires to start when they get caught up in the HV power lines.
Not very nice but these are some of the causes.

And Jeremy added to all these possible starters - very, very dry vegetation; strong winds and high temperatures all combine to make many of our bushfires lethal.

Yes Bernie, very true. And would you believe that someone lit 3 fires in the Belaire national park in the Adelaide hills - these were put out before pretty fast.

I can't imagine what goes through these peoples minds to go around starting fires. It kills so much of the wildlife and takes human life as well. The firemen all need medals for the work they do in putting out the fires and rescueing people they also put their own lives on the line in doing so to.
