No wonder it made me feel somewhere more tropical! This is a butterfly conservatory in Kitchener, Ontario. Sorry to confuse your husband!

Bernieh, what is the plant in this picture. There is one up at the hospital and no one knows what it is. I think its very attractive.

Hi Gilli. It looks like the Philodendron bipinnatifidum or what we call the split-leaf or cut-leaf philodendron (sometimes confused with the monstera deliciosa - but that one has the swiss cheese look with holes in the leaves as well). This one grows like a shrub with a single stem and is not a climber. Does that sound like the one you see?

There's a picture on the next page of one of these (I think it's the same) next to it's label. I can read the bit that says 'Hope Philodendreon' but can't read the smaller writing.

Yes Gillian you're right - the little sign says 'philodendron selloum' which is what the philodendron bipinnatifidum is often sold as over here, also sometimes referred to as the 'tree philodendron'.

Bernieh:
It is so true this Philodendron is often mis-labeled - I'm not sure why...although here they are sold as Philodendron bipinnatifidum. Philodendron bipinnatifidum and Philodendron selloum are the most common 'tree philodendrons' sold here. There's also many hybrids.

Hi Delonix1 I think some of the nurseries over here just don't research that well - and lots of things end up with names that closely match but may not be correct. Close enough is good enough - I think that's how it is sometimes.

What else?
See who else is growing Philodendron bipinnatifidum (Banana de Imbe).
See who else has plants in genus Philodendron.

This series of photos shows all the plants we have here in north Queensland - where is this? My husband just wandered past and, thinking this was a photo of our garden, asked when I had added the rocks to our driveway garden! Bless him!
