It's Monday Feb. 9 almost midday in Australian Eastern Standard Time and the heavy rain has stopped in Townsville! I can actually walk around outside again and see the hills which have been completely obliterated by grey cloud for over a fortnight now.

Very true Janette. It's hard to get our heads around what has happened and is still happening down there in Victoria. So many lives lost and the fires are still burning.

Bernieh:
We've seen the fires on the news almost everyday last week. It's horrible...very similar to the types of "Firestorms" we get during a strong 'Santa Ana Event". Our hearts go out to the People of Victoria and South Australia.
In fact, I saw on the news, the South Australian/Victorian governments were consulting with our local government officials in San Diego...because of our similar experienced catastrophic fires in San Diego -- 2003 and 2007 when many thousands of homes were destroyed and sadly many people were killed also.
I hope the fires subsides soon!
