Feb 17 - warm enough to sit on the deck this afternoon until the wind picked up. A nice south view down to the beach too. A little red squirrel kept me company (see next photo).

A little red Squizzle? Why have you got them and not me?

They haven't learned to swim yet...

I'm wondering what differences there may be between our NA red squirrels and those in England and Europe? How nice to have squirrel company on such a lovely day, Elke! does the ocean moderate your temps much? You must have constant wind though? Beautiful spot.

I looked at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris, or common tree squirrel) and then this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Red_Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, or pine squirrel). So 2 different genii. Thanks for pointing that out. And yes, the ocean has a huge effect, especially as we are on the south coast. Very often the areas around the Bay of Fundy (Annapolis Valley and New Brunswick) will have tons of snow in winter, and we might get straight rain. It also keeps us a little cooler in summer, compared to Montreal, where we used to live. And yes, the wind (sometimes hurricane strength) is a factor, but I enjoy it, and like to be able to see the weather approaching.

Yes...being able to read the wind and see the approach of weather is a definite plus...I've been agate hunting on the shores of Lake Superior..enjoying a lovely sunny day...when suddenly my Dad said...it will be raining like mad in about five minutes and we're about that distance from the car...time to go...I dawdled and got caught in the rain!...lesson learned about marine climate. We have the gray squirrels, red squirrels (but not as many) and of course the big black squirrels! I love them all and I hope they learn to get along cause I'd hate to lose them...I live beside a large wooded area but have never seen a ground squirrel...I love chipmunks, too.
