This is a lovely colour. did you grow them from seed?

I bought them from the nursery. I've given up on seeds. Tried several packets of seeds, but as soon as the seedlings emerge, the birds eat them.

Oh, that's a shame, I've always found these ok to grow from seed but, of course I have to grow them inside!

I've never had trouble direct seeding portulaca. Maybe our birds don't like them...??

You are lucky. The birds here eat many seedlings. Chilli, Pepper, Portulaca, and the list goes on. And they are smart too. They can flip up the plastic we use to cover the pot and eat the seedlings up.

Oh dear. Nice to see the birds in the garden but they can cause damage. The pigeons and doves always seem to take a liking to large leaved Verbascum in my garden and they make huge holes in the leaves! And it seems a pity to cover them with wire or netting.Ugly but also dangerous to the birds.

I do agree its nice to see the birds and other winged creatures in the garden.

Many home gardeners over here actually use rice sacks or similar tough sheets to wrap fruits like papaya, mango, jambu, etc to protect the fruits from birds. It's a hassle, though. (Ugly too)

Yes, similar here with cherries in particular. People net the trees otherwise the birds will strip them in a matter of days! I haven't got fruit trees so I don't have this problem.
