Crazy Eileen...her sister keeps a Chinese water dragon..and had got too many mealworms so gave her some for our birds.Trouble is once Jane started to feed them lettuce wanted to keep them as pets LOL

~I can cope with spiders~the non lethal kind! and bees I love,wasps will tolerate but mealworms and maggots definitely don't cut it!

Didn't you have the shellfish man come round with his horse and cart on Sundays? Sorry Alene, shouldn't of said that you are certainly too young to remember those days. We used to go to the shellfish man and get winkles for tea. We also used to take a coal shovel to collect something for the roses at the same time.

~we used to go on the beach after the tide had gone out with a hoe and get sandeels~then we had a square wooden boat with a sail at the end of a long fishing line and the tide would take it out to sea. The sandeels were used for bait.When the line was brought in there were usually fish for supper!

Didnt get the winkleman , Toto but recall the rag and bone man and the coalman with horse and cart.The horse knew his round so well he would walk on to the next house as the coalmen called .

The only thing I really couldnt eat was jellied eels ..mind you Arlene with your trips to Northumberland you must know Craister where they still smoke kippers over oak wood - they were lovely with a poached egg.

Sounds wonderful Arlene. I've never done that although I did used to go fishing and occassionaly caught something.

~yes Toto it was lovely on a warm evening and sometimes there were a few boats out together and you could see the little lights on the boats~ very rudimentary just a thick shaped piece of wood with a sail.
My grandparents lived about 150 yards from the dunes down to the beach~rows of stone cottagesnow demolished.

~had a look in there years ago~I love to go to this little cafe in Seahouses which specialises in fresh fish and chips with mushy peas and bread and butter~great when it's a bit chilly and the wind is off the sea!

We have an award winning fish and chip shop at the end of the street ..mm cant eat them without mushy peas should be law ! lol

We used to get the winkle man, the milkman, the coalman and the baker all with the appropriate equipment for feeding the roses. Sadly all gone now with so called progress. As for jellied eels, they are georgeos and if anything should be made law, the consumption of jellied eels should. Very expensive now for what was a poor mans meal.

What about that new steam train from York to Newcastle~tremendous achievement!
We have been to the local steam museum in Newcastle and taken a ride on the little train when the kids were younger.
My hubby used to live near the main line from London to Edinburgh~ still remember the clouds of steam as you went over the bridge when the train went through.He remembers Mallard Sir Nigel Gresley and the Flying Scot.
His great grandfather was Station master at Leeds and retired to the crossing at Dilston near Hexham where he had a cottage and would change the points and open the gates.Loves steam trains so we may have to do a trip up there soon!

Ooh no Toto - I ll stick to extra portions of peas thank you ..or even these mealworms as opposed to them ...

Wonderful Arlene - the new steam train is a fantasic not sure about the use of coal for it and its implications enviromentally but a joy to see and how eco friendly are all the deisels ?

The trains you mention still run on special heavily over subscribed trips the Mallard is such a great piece of engineering still looks futuristic ... we had some beautiful branch line railways , the old lines now make lovely nature trails .

~I expect the York to Newcastle one will be oversubscribed too~will have to look into which towns it will be travelling to~
As a birthday prezzie my daughter gave her dad a choice of accomodation and a day At the Duxford Flying Legends air show or a day on a BSA motorcycle in the forest of Dean~when his ankle heals!~maybe this will be on the menu too!

BB....are you in Scarborough????? My all time favourite place. What's that fish and chip shop called that used to be on the front across from the harbour.....Bamfords or something? Is it still there??

Think I might lose weight fast if these were on the menu Gilli..as for black widows err thats kind of you and as much as I d love them ( ? ) unfortunately we have strict controls over importing such things ..yeah go on admit they d scare the hell out of me ! lol

Not far from Scarborough and yes Bamfords still there as well as Harbour Bar Cafe - Jaconellis Ice cream remember that ? Still with the chrome and red pvc look that people think is retro 60s - no its original.lol just never got round to changing it !

Like many seaside resorts became somewhat sad and neglected but more people now holidaying at home and much has been done to spruce the town up.The parks and gardens have always been a feature - recall Peasholm park and the open theatre in the process of being refurbished - so at long last learning to treasure the gems from the past .

You may recall the old St Thomas Hospital right on the sea front with its ornate glass verandah where those with chest infections would be wheeled out to take in the sea air ! Not sure of the recovery rate but was a beautiful
building - now an amusement arcade think this made locals realise that whilst tastes change as well as uses , preserving structures has to better than bulldozing and replacing with concrete slabs.

~I think with credit crunch and if we have some good weather quite a few seaside towns may have a renaissance!~only trouble then is hordes of people instead of tranquility~ah well, can't have everything!

Lol Arlene the only thing wrong with tourism is the tourists - the only thing wrong with shopping is the shoppers ....the only thing wrong with Wales is the ..oops must stop watching Anne Robinson ..sorry Hywel .x

I have been caught up with all your nosalga and, although mine are south of the Thames memories, they are very similar. We had a pig-bin down our road into which we placed all waste food. The milkman's horse used to wander across the road on his own, take off the lid and help himself. As children we waited with great excitement for this event each week! We also had a greengrocer and horse each Saturday as well as the baker and milkman and, of course, the rag and bone man. Very few cars in the street so that was our playground - very different from today. Thanks for jogging the memories :)

Oh BB...thanks for the update. My Grandparents retired to Scarborough and I lived there for about 6 months before emigrating to Canada. I wandered all over that town and loved it. (Back in the days when it was safe to let your kids wander around on their own). I do remember Jaconellis and Peasholme Park and the open air theatre and watching....gosh what was it called?.....'It's a knockout'???? there. Shame that St. Thomas Hospital verandah area is now an arcade but, like you say, its better than the building disappearing altogether. I loved the harbour. My Grandad and I used to walk down there almost everyday and watch the fishing boats unloading their catch. Marine drive with the waves crashing up higher than the double deckers. Knickerbocker Glories that my Grandma loved so much. The green wooden shack down by the harbour that sold freshly cooked shrimp. Oooo....memories...such happy memories. There was a lovely garden in behind the Natural History museum on the hillside. I spent a lot of time in there with the flowers. I wonder if it is still there. Some day, when I win the lottery (Ha! Fat chance) I will come back for a visit and see how everything has changed.

Oh Gilli the gardens you remember behind the museum are still there.! The Rotunda museum is the one you recall..not changed much in all those years.If ever you want to come back there is always a room for you here with us.In the meantime Gilli will post some pics for you asap..a parks and gardens blog and hope others find it interesting ! x

Oh BB that would be wonderful. Yes it was the Rotunda museum. I remember going in there often to look at all the stuffed birds and animals. I loved it.

Welcome Gilli...dont go into town very often now but will try and submit photos and blog round about Easter time,when will have time to take some leisurly strolls around,and the gardens will be all planted up.

~trouble is BB you get used to nobody there in the winter on our beach and then suddenly you can't get moved.We go to Verdi's in Mumbles through the year but sometimes have to wait for a table on Sunday mornings in the summer and it is packed out.Nice view across the bay and nice food too!.Is Scarborough the same?
No doubt the local tradesmen are happy though!
During the off season we don't get charged car park fees like in the summer months which ensures that there is some movement even though you may have to wait a while,.

Exactly the same Arlene.......lovely in winter....crowded out in summer !

ah well we get to see the best of it all the time!everyone else has to go home!
