Faithful German Shepherd Dog.
Good that he gives you lots of encouragement with your digging. :o)

The grey muzzle is probably the result of a hard life. He is estimated to be 6 years old and a rescue dog, having become a stray in Ireland where I am told the Irish government has declared German Shepherds to be dangerous dogs with the result that they are being dumped (if not worse) and cannot be rehomed. He was exported to the Wood Green rescue centre where he was in quarantine for 2 weeks while they sorted out his problems, including kennel cough, lice and fleas, some injuries and dreadful coat condition (we could smell him from the other side of the room and he couldn't be bathed until the kennel cough was cured). He must have lived rough for some time and can't resist chasing squirrels (may have been part of his diet?) but on the plus side our garden is free of them whenever he is on patrol.
We have had him for about a year now and he has turned out to be one of the best German Shepherds we have ever had (currently number 6). He is affectionate, obedient, lively and playful, protective, very good with children and barmy about other dogs and has brought great joy into our lives.
