Saw this kookaburra today feasting on a rhinoceros beetle.

He was holding the rhino beetle in his beak and dashing it against the rock.

Yes they are the largest of the kingfishers Tina2. This particular one is what we call the 'laughing kookaburra' - Dacelo novaeguineae. There is a family of kookaburras that live in the little valley next to my home and we often see them around our yard.

Ooh that's a lovely shot..did you use a telescopic lens? I mostly end up scaring the bird away or, I didn't notice the bird in the first place..lol!!!

Hi Justjan. No I don't use a telescopic lens (don't have one). This bird was about 5 metres away from me in my garden - they come in regularly and as long as you don't get too close they seem to be content to stay where they are.
