Not a clue Dawn...usually takes a long time to build up that sort of trust.Luck you...our pair are much more flighty,although one is more cheeky and sits looking in the kitchen window at us.The other is more aloof !

Hi Amy, lovely isn't it. BB: This one has a mate (I think) but sits in the bush behind and feeds when he has done - is there any way to tell the difference between a male and female robin?

Not officially Dawn,but we suspect that as the male is so terratorial he has a larger red breast.Whenever we have seen two robins together one has a larger redbreast and the other a half ! Only a theory !

Thanks DoctorBob. Ha ha, if you saw me I think you would agree that I wont start a new fashion, lol. Today when I went to feed him, he was waiting in a nearby tree and I put the mealworms in my out stretched hand and he flew down, hovered like a humming bird, took one!! It is very weird Bob, have you ever had tame robins when you've been working?

Hi Dawn..so he came back for a repeat performance ? You are sooo lucky,and by the way...your robin couldnt care less what you are wearing ! Just keep those mealworms coming !! LOL

Hi Dawn, I've got a tale to tell which isn't very nice really, years ago at one place I was working we had a potting shed, we had mice there, so we set a trap behind the potting shed, unfortunately we caught a robin, when we took it out of the trap his leg was almost broken off, we put him in the potting shed and cut off the leg and cauterised it with a cigarette. He soon recovered and we fed him every day, he stayed with us for 18 months, he would be waiting every day when we arrived and we fed him during the day with worms etc. so he didn't have to forage. Sadly after that time he was killed by another robin who took over his territory. We really missed him.
When digging I have often had robins around me, as many as five sometimes.

What a lovely (albeit) sad story Bob, at least he had a nice life afterwards and he trusted you, which is nice. Bonkers tells me they will fight to the death to protect their territory. Amazing creatures and strange how they are so much friendlier than other species of birds :-) The true gardener's friend!

Lucky you, Dawn. My pocket guide to garden birds says the female robin has a 'V' shaped brown cap to forehead, whereas the male has a 'U' shape. Your friend in the photo must be a male.

Arlene, that's amazing info, thank you, they say we learn something new everyday! I know this one is a male because this week he was feeding on the meal worms then he would fly off with one in his mouth and feed it to his mate, which was flapping and squeeking like a baby bird. I asked BB about it and he said they go through this bonding ritual and its the female's way of checking that he will feed her when she sitting on the nest.
