I bought one of these ( hydrangea petiolaris isn't it) in 2002, it was a bit smaller than yours. I have grown it on a north facing wall under the window of my lobby. It seemed to be slow growing for the first couple of years, I thought it was unhappy and that I hadn't given it what it needed, then it began to double its size each year. The year before last it produced one flower and last year it produced about five. Apparently this is their habit. I am looking forward to its display of flowers this summer.
Late last summer I took some cuttings, stood them in a sheltered spot in the garden ...... so far so good, I am hoping to succeed in clothing my partner's lobby in the same way.
