Evening and Pine Grosbeaks

They look like they're related to our finches, very pretty birds!

Yes the grosbeaks are members of the finch family! These guys are cheeky...and scrappy too! they are plentiful and would descend on the table when I had put out fresh seed mix...they'd clean it off in no time!! got so I hated to see them come! While I did like the red pine grosbeaks...they seemed a little more sedate...It was the pine grosbeaks that the female cardinal was with. She (the female cardinal I called Amelia) caused quite a stir among the birders because she was hundreds of miles above the level of latitude that is their usual most northernly range...

Maybe the Grosbeeks adopted her somewhere. She was just staying with the family. Always wondering why she was the only one that caught the chills. .lol. :-)

I think perhaps you have the right of it GT... she came to us riding an El Nino Storm...it was above zero on New Years Eve... but temps plunged back to norms...-20 C. (daytime high) I called her Amelia (Earhart) 'cause she was a little off course... and she was adopted by the Pine GB's (or she adopted them) She was seen at feeders but disappeared after two weeks of the seriously cold temps...I just hope that she was able to tell her grandchicks about her northern adventure!!!
