Chinese bamboo carving

I got this at the flea market this weekend. Looks like a caterpillar pupa to me. I tried to ge the story behind it, but the lady I bought it from spoke very little english. She said that it was a Chinese bamboo root carving.

It's definitely Chinese, Grammazoo and it's carved from a bamboo shoot. That's all I know about it for sure though :)

It is really cool looking - would be nice to know where it originated, but still a great find.
