A closer look at the variegated orchid-type flowers. They will develop many bean-like pods after blooming. The most widely plant Orchid Tree in California. They tolerate very high heat...as it can be as hot as 122 degrees F./ 51 degrees C. in Borrego Springs in Summer. Photo taken March 31, 2009.

Yes, they are very common here also. There's a Bauhinia species in bloom all year here.
