This plant is native to Japan, very hardy even in mountain snow-capped heavily. Shirane-aoi is Japanese name, 'Shirane' is the name of 'Mt. Shirane' in historically famous Nikkou in origin.
Mt. Shirane abounds in the plant, which is like aoi( Japanese name of hollyhock), so named Shirane-aoi.
