New garden visitor

This ring-necked parakeet has been visiting our garden for 3 weeks now. He is so beautiful, but I am sad that he has not brought a female with him, he must be very lonely.

Have you seen any lost pet ads about him? Someone could be very upset if he is an escaped pet.

Here in the UK ring-necked parakeets have become naturalised in the South of the country, in and around Sussex, Kent and London. We are in Shropshire which is in the West Midlands area, so this little bird seems to have left (or been evacuated) from the remaining flock. It is a young bird, so could have been chased off by another male adult parakeet. Our hope is some of the group find their way to our county so that he is not confined to a lonely existence. According to the RSPB most counties now have had sightings of ring-necked parakeets so it seems that they are spreading around the UK. All we can do is to ensure that there is a good supply of seeds, nuts and water.

Interesting I did not know that they could survive the cold temps like that. The only place in the US, that I am aware of, that a tropical bird has established is south Florida. So maybe he will stick around if he feels welcome. Lovely!

The RSPB tell me that they have been in the British Isles since the late 1970's, so those that we now see in the wild have been reared here. They originally came from India and I understand that the first batch escaped from a crate arriving at Heathrow and became naturalised. Good luck to them, they are happier in the wild, than in a cage, even if they have to survive out changeable weather.
