Pussy Willows

Pussy Willows

“I came upon them yesterday, merely by chance,
Those newly born pussies asleep on the branch.
I could not see ear points or tail tips at all,
They were curled tightly in the fluff of a ball.
But I thought that I heard as the March wind was stirring
The soft gentle sound of a low note of purring.
I wonder if they would have leaped from their bows
And arched their wee backs with frightened meows
If I had dared tell them with one warning cry
That a fierce patch of dogwood was growing close by?
Author unknown, probably horribly misquoted, from a poem I memorized when I was in elementary school.

Thank you Arlene and Janette. I have always been fond of pussy willows, they are the first hope of spring here. These ar quickly turning to catkins. A few leaves are finally showing on other shrubs and plants, it's been a late spring even for Western Washington.

I love the photo and the poem Sisty...thank you!
My weeping pussy willow tree..had just a few catkins this spring and it was early on..they are now all silly looking like they've been scared by a dog wood all right....about ready to fall off and let the leaves to it.
My french pink did not get any catkins...not sure why...the shrub looks healthy and has lots of leaves right now though.

Thanks, Sis-n. My bush is common but this year the advanced fur balls turned bright yellow during the pollen stage and were kind of pretty. A neighborhood deer used my weeping pussy willow to rub the velvet off his horns last fall... unless it comes back up from above the the graft, it's probably done for.
