Geranium phaeum 'Margaret Hunt'

Geranium phaeum 'Margaret Hunt' (Geranium phaeum (Mourning widow))

This one is having some TLC in the greenhouse before I plant it out. It has pretty marbled lemon and lime coloured leaves.

Lovely is this a new variety Spritz?

To me, yes. Otherwise, I don't think so. I was trawling through Nursery lists to find another G phaeum 'Variegatum' and came across this... so it's here and will be in m garden soon!

Do you know how to propagate G. phaeums, Angie?

30 Apr, 2009

seed? or root division i would gues, i never know which way to go as some plants are not true in seed or they are sterile so i just take pot luck lol i have'nt tried with mine as yet as it only went in last year, it is in flower now so was going to try seeds - is this a no go?

I really have no idea - but, as with all cultivars, it may mean that seeds don't come true. This is only a baby and I wouldn't be able to split it this year.

no i am not very good at knowing this, but who knows even if seed does'nt come true might get something really different instead if it crosses with something else - is that how it works? or does it just revert to a bog standard variety?...

It would go back to whichever it was crossed with, I suppose.

My friend with the knowledge was in the lane when Henry and I came home and she said it's better to split G. phaeums. So when the mauve one has finished flowering, I'll have a go.

thanks :-)

Yes, they are dead easy to split by propogation. I can't wait to see my Margie in flower this year.....something to look forward to ..and the leaves as well of course!

The leaves are the best feature, really - the flowers are the icing on the cake. :-)
