The only relative of elderberry worth growing Lori - very pretty as Totos pics will show ..

I have pics of elderberry growing beside a farm field in Muskoka....it's flower is white and as I remember the bush was alive with bees! I'm excited about this one ...I hope it does well..it didn't cost as much as I had expected to pay...(only $20.) and it's a gallon pot and the plant is about 3ft tall! Did I do ok, BB/Jane? LOL...

~you certainly did Lori!

I guess it's obvious that I've been waiting for a long time to go shopping for plants...no kid in any candy store ever had as much fun as I did today at the nursery!!!

You will love it Lori.....its a beauty..........

Yes Lori well done you - not sure how the coversion to our pound is now used to be over 2 Can dollars to the pound probably the other way round now ! Those dark leaves against the white flowers the buds tinged pink before opening - wouldnt mind these growing wild in my garden.

Thanks Milky...thanks BB/Jane! I've always based any calculations very loosely on $2.00/Lb...(I just realized my keyboard doesn't have the L symbol for the pound sterling) at least you don't have to divide by 12 anymore! still, what's with that euro thingy? Did the decimalization make things easier...or just more complicated for those who were used the old way!!?? lol... We view metrication the same way...give me lbs. and oz. and miles per hour...and Fahrenheit scale...!! I must sound like a Luddite! hahaha. sorry about the digression...I will try to give the elderberry every opportunity to grow as big as it wants to... I just saw Toto's pic and I'm chuffed...hope mine looks as good as that!

Oh Lori how do you know about Luddites ? $2 to the lb no symbol £ sterling ? Think your better sticking to lbs probably worth more ..Euros designed to amalgamate all different European currencies and create a European state allowing us all to cross borders freely and live work wherever we choose.Decimal quite simple really just keep multiplying the cost of everything by 10 .
That was a party political broadcast on behalf of those from other planets.
Hang on to what you have and understand .

Well done Bonkers. I could never have confused me the way you have managed to. I hope you were standing to attention while you were praising good old Ted Heath and all the other con merchants.
29 Apr, 2009
OMG Toto - must ve confused you if you thought I was praising them !
29 Apr, 2009
. ..I must have a little Ludd or Sabot in me... I'm hoping for a groundswell of common sense and good governance..LOL...is that too much to ask these days? I've heard about the changes going on because of the amalgamation ...and I marvel...didn't you fight two world wars to keep Europe off of Britain's back? Is all of this euro business the spawn of the gnomes of Zurich? ...or is it just progress for the sake of it?
29 Apr, 2009
~It's not progress ~it's centralization gone mad~with total lack of national sovereignty~we would love to have a vote on Europe Lori but they won't let us because they know we would say no!
How's that for democracy! They are making Ireland hold another referendum so they can yes this time~I hope they still say no!
Sign here for the take Britain out of Europe campaign!

What amazes me is that they are putting the pressure on for good old Britain to conform to a European ideal...(?) ....! That's not the English way... I hope Ireland stands up to them. when I hear you all talking about the councils and the powers they have I see a state where there is no real freedom... a place that is vulnerable to petty tyrannys.....

Actually Bonkers. On that point I, not only followed your drift I actually managed to get slightly ahead. Not for one moment did I detect any sense of praise in your missive. I must of had a brainstorm!

Took a big step and put the Sambucas in the ground!!! it was really pot bound so I decided I'd give it a break and plant it in some nice compost!

Lori:
Beautiful tree! How long can it stay in a pot?
7 May, 2009
I put it into my garden because it was terribly pot bound...I was thinking I might keep it in the pot until I moved...but slid the pot off to take a look and was horrified that the roots were round and round the bottom of the pot. Did my best to spread the roots...hope it comes along.

Lori:
Can the roots be pruned without any ill effect to the little tree? I root prune most of my potted planted...with few exceptions.
7 May, 2009
The roots were many times around the bottom of the pot...and I was worried because I know once they are bound like that they will not readily spread....so I did not prune..(and perhaps I should have been more careful) instead I cut an x across the bottom, seized the four corners and pulled outward...exposing the inner roots to the soil in the bottom of the hole...I tamped them down and backfilled...mounding the soil at the dripline, creating a basin which I filled with water ...it drained slowly...so I didn't give it too much at one time...I'm watching it for any wilting or stress...but we've had rain and it's been overcast and warm...so that should be perfect for it's recovery... fingers crossed!

I suppose you know that this is very fast growing and will become a 30ft tree in only a few years. The good news is that you can cut it down really low when you've had the benefit of the years growth and it will come back to give a nice manageable show each year. I'll have a look in a minute and if I can find it I'll post a pic of what you can expect.
