Evening Primrose

this is lovely, i lost 2 of my ones of these through our very cold winter, luckly i still have one left and lots of seeds - great pic i do love these...i also have grown some orange ones from seed this year, never had them before i think they are quite new, have you tried them before?

I hadn't tried them before I planted these. I ordered them from a catalog because they were new and different. Last year they didn't grow at all and that's why I thought I lost them but this year there they were looking good. Do you think they are biennials? They always confuse me how they grow.

the ones i had are perennial, which basically means that they will die back in winter, sometimes all the way underground so only the root is left, but they will come back in the spring, from the same root system or bulb, corm, etc. an annual is a plant that completes its life cycle in 1 year. which means it will grow from seed, flower, set seed and then die in the same year, some will self seed and end up all around the garden usually known as 'hardy annuals', others need a helping hand, eg removing the seed in autumn and then re-sowing them in spring and protecting them from the coldest months of the year (half hardy annuals) and bedding plants will need a heated propergator or greenhouse to re-grow from seed. Bianual plants (for example Hollyhock) will grow from seed in the first year but only leaves. They then go dormant or underground for winter like a perennial does, then it will re-grow in it's second year, flower, and then set seed and die like an annual. As far as i know Evening primrose are perennial, but there could varieties that are short lived perennials, which do grow from base and flower in the same year, but only come back 2 or 3 times then they will die. hope that helps :-) it can be confussing.
