This Slender Lady Palm is growing in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. This is the most beautiful in my opinion of the Rhapis species.

Benieh, Lori:
Yes, this is a beautiful palm. It is however, not that readily available for sale. Because only male plants are know in the wild...so it has to be divided for distribution. Rhapis excelsa - Lady Palm is very widely available in nurseries, however, large plants command a large price because they are very slow growing. I'll post my large Rhapis excelsa - Lady Palm soon. It is only about 4.5 feet / 1.4 meters tall and I've had it over 20 years.

Ah that's a piece of irony! Male plants only...called Lady Palm! haha...wonder if some taxonomist had a little chuckle to himself?! lol.

Lori:
Yes, that is ironic isn't it! LOL! I'm not sure if the taxonomist actually created the common name. The problem with common names is that they are locally (around the World) so different.

This Rhapis Humilis is amazing.....I can just imagine one of them in my courtyard, but unfortunately our frost will kill it.....

Louis, you may be surprised...they are hardy to 20 degrees F. / 6.7 degrees C. for short periods of time...from what I've read.

I love palms and this would look great in my garden. I don`t think it would survive our Winter though.....

Raphispalm:
Thank you! This palm is located in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. There's most likely more than 400 species of palms growing outside there. I do know quite a bit about palms...I have more than 100 species of palms growing outside in my garden. I joined The International Palm Society back in 1984. I'm also, the GoYpedia palm editor.

In that case Delonix1, if I see this Slender Lady Palm, I might be tempted and give it a go ... Thanks for the information :-)

Louis:
Raphis excelsa is much hardier than R. humilis. That may be the best species to grow in your climate.

Never seen one for sale. I cant say I've seen one outdoors in the bay area. The SF botanical garden has a huge one IN their library.

I've seen several in the Bay Area. It's a very easy palm to grow there. It loves Hayward's climate!

Love this palm - I'm a bit of a fan on the slender ones.
