Spathodea campanulata - African Tulip Tree

Spathodea campanulata - African Tulip Tree (Spathodea campanulata - African Tulip Tree)

This young African Tulip Tree is just starting to bloom. There's many trees in San Diego, CA and some trees bloom anytime of the year. The typical bloom time is in Summer though. Photo taken April 23, 2009.

It's the same here with these trees - most bloom during the summer, but you do see some blooming at other times as well. They're quite a common sight here in the north.

Benieh:

I'm sure they grow very large there in Northern Queensland, Australia.
This little tree replaced the 40 foot/ 12.2 meter tall tree that blew down in a bad storm 4 years ago in this same place.

The grafted yellow/gold African Tulip tree has become even more popular in the last 5 years or so. I know you've seen my posting of this beautiful tree.
This variety doesn't grow as tall as the orange/red tree though...which is better for a smaller garden.

Yes you're absolutely right - these trees can be huge. I haven't seen the yellow variety up here but I have seen your photo - it's more stunning I think.

Bernieh:

I'm very surprised they are not available in your area of Australia yet...I bet they will coming soon.

When I originally posted the yellow/gold variety last year...Marguerite from Darwin, Australia said that she had never seen this variety also. I'll have to find out where this yellow/gold (African Tulip) variety originated...I can't imagine it would be here in California.

I have actually been looking out for it at a few of the nurseries here, but they don't have it and when I asked specifically for it - they didn't seem to know much about it! I have one nursery owner on the lookout for it though - will see what eventuates!

Bernieh:

The botanical name is: Spathodea campanulata var. 'Lutea' - Gold/Yellow African Tulip. I know they are grafted trees. I couldn't find out where they orginated...I guess I need to do more research.

Good luck finding this variety of African Tulip! It is stunning when viewed in person...and I know it would do very well in your tropical climate.
