Are these ferns which die down in the winter ?

yes some of them do terra. I know it is a bit of a mess then but this is hubbies corner. We have put in an osmanthus and another evergreen recently and when we cut back in winter and put a nice layer of bark on. there is also a coloured dogwood just out of the picture and a hydrangea near the front door
