This is really unusual looking. Is it from a bulb?

Yes It is Gilli, a rather large one, about the size of your fist. It grows to about 2 foot high with large hosta like leaves at the bottom and a big stork in the middle with the pineapple like flowers at the top and a trange fringe like leafy bit on top of that. it is very unusual but very pretty aswell. acording to my plant chooser book it comes from north america, likes full sun conditions and can be planted in the garden or in tubs. it also does well in conservatories. I've had four of them (grown in metal buckets) for about 3 years and they come back in force every year without fail. a friend of mine devoted a whole bed in his garden to about 20 of them and red hot poker behind once and it looked amazing. the botanic name for them is - eucomis bicolor there is also a similar plant called eucomis comosa which has slightly thiner flower clumps and the flowers are more of an off white colour. Tref.

Wow Tref....you know a lot about these lilies. Thanks for letting me know. I'll have to look out for some.
