I saw someone do it when I was young. They used an old marker but I use food coloring. I do leave flowers in the garden where they belong, but this one must have been damaged by the wind and was ready to crack off so I brought it inside.

This is beautiful I thought you'd grown a new species!

When I was a kid we used to split stems of white carnations in two, and put each end in a different tube of water with a different food colour.
Once the colours saturated the petals on 'their side' of the flower, we'd cut off the split part of the stem and put the flowers in a regular vase. The two colours didn't last long, but the activity was pretty thrilling to us kids.

Such a wonderful effect. The splitting sounds nice too, more colors!

Rosalieg, what a wonderful idea. I will definately be trying this before the summer is though, but probabaly not with carnations.
