San Diego - Delonix regia - Royal Poinciana and Jacaranda mimosifolia - Jacaranda

San Diego - Delonix regia - Royal Poinciana and Jacaranda mimosifolia - Jacaranda

The Royal Poinciana was leafing out. They go decidous in March or April...usually the same time as Jacaranda which is blooming in this photo. The Royal Poinciana will not bloom until late June or July though.

Interesting Andy......post a pic please when it comes in to bloom.
The Jacaranda is lovely....I have about 12 seedlings that I started in December. They are healthy little things about 3 inches high. Up here I will have to bring them inside during the winter but they will go outside in the summer. Hopefully, in pots they won't get nearly as big as the one in the photo....if they do, I'm in big trouble.

Gilli:

This photo was taken at a GoY memeber's neigborhood just less than a mile from the Mexican border.

I will have to go back to GoY memeber Giovanni's neighborhood to take a photo of this tree when it's in bloom. Jacarandas grow quickly, however, will not grow more than 12 feet/4 meters in a large pot...they generally don't bloom in a pot either. This partial photo of the Jacaranda is a small tree...I'll be posting photos of my 50 foot/ 16 meter Jacaranda soon, it's blooming now...I'm waiting until peak bloom before I post them though.

Bernieh:

Yes, they are one of my favorite trees also. Occasionally, I see the rare pink and white varieties of Jacaranda.

The best way to take a photo of a Jacaranda is on a cloudy day...the blue/purple color really shows up well.

I would love to see a pic in full bloom Delonix.
12 feet in a pot is still way too big for my house!! Oh my goodness. I think the poor thing will have to be chopped in half if it approaches anywhere near that size. LOL

Gilli:

They can be trimmed to any size in a pot. The smallest I see them trimmed to in the ground is 12 feet/ 4 meters tall...and that's very small for this tree.

You'll have to see the larger tree I just posted yesterday. It's over 50 feet/16 meters tall...and that's about average size.

I'm on my way to see it now Andy.
I potted on the seedlings yesterday and they are looking so good. I have 14 of them so I'm going to have to find homes for some of them I think. Can't have 14 - 12 foot trees....the house isn't big enough by far. LOL

Gilli:

If they are kept is somewhat smaller pots this will force them to stay smaller for a longer period of time. Good Luck!
